The governments of Cape Verde and Portugal are joining the United Nations this Friday at a ceremony in the city of Praia to announce the archipelago’s entry into the UN Global Accelerator on Labor and Social Protection.
The official announcement of the accession will be made at an event chaired by the Prime Minister of Cape Verde, Ulisses Correia e Silva, with the participation of the Portuguese Minister of Labor Ana Mendes Godinho and the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Capo. Verde, Patricia Souza.
“This global initiative, coordinated by the International Labor Organization (ILO), aims to promote employment recovery and create at least 400 million decent jobs” worldwide, “in addition to expanding social protection for hitherto excluded groups.” , declared the Statement of the Government of Cape Verde.
Cape Verde and Portugal 10 days ago signed an application to the United Nations to support a vocational training project under this acceleration programme.
This is a training initiative costing four million euros, spanning two years and reaching 2,000 people.
The qualification will cover areas classified as important for Cape Verde and Portugal, forming human capital for the country, but which can also be combined with the interests of Portuguese companies, organizers said.
The project covers, among others, renewable energy, digital economy, social sector, tourism, metalworking, mechatronics and civil engineering.
The Cape Verdean government also hopes that the project with Portugal will help turn the archipelago into “a training center for the Community of Portuguese-Language Countries (CPLP),” Deputy Prime Minister Olavo Belt said at the time.
The organizers hope that the project will begin accepting its first graduates this year.
The CPLP consists of nine countries: Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, Mozambique, Sao Tome and Principe and Timor-Leste.
