The Angolan foreign minister this Wednesday asked his Russian counterpart for a ceasefire with Ukraine, and Lavrov, who is in Luanda, recalled Moscow’s solidarity with Angola and blamed Ukraine for the conflict.
Tete Antonio and Sergey Lavrov are heading the delegations of the two countries, which are holding the first bilateral meeting this Wednesday as part of the visit of the head of Russian diplomacy to the country as part of a series of contacts with African partners.
In a speech preceding the meeting of the two delegations, Tete Antóniou reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening and improving the bonds of friendship and cooperation that unite the two countries, but mentioned the threat posed by the Russian-Ukrainian conflict to world peace and insisted on finding a solution through dialogue
“We will still have the opportunity to continue considering this issue, taking into account your experience, we will listen very carefully to your analysis of this dispute,” Tete Antoniu told Sergey Lavrov, calling on the Russian authorities “to give a chance to save the status and prestige of the country by establishing as advocated by the President of Angola, a final ceasefire that can restore an atmosphere of world peace.”
Russia was one of the main supporters of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA, in power) in the Angolan civil war.
The Angolan minister said that Lavrov’s visit “is another opportunity to strengthen relations between the two countries” and deepen cooperation in existing areas and identify new areas such as agriculture, agribusiness and manufacturing, among others, recalling that the priority of the executive branch is economic diversification.
“The two countries have traditionally friendly relations,” which is also a guarantee of a frank dialogue, traditional friends on our relations and other issues of interest, he stressed.
During the Russian minister’s speech, journalists accompanying the meeting were told that they would have to leave the room, leading Lavrov to question the press’ withdrawal.
According to Mirex officials, Tete Antonio indicated that the journalists could stay on the premises, but Russian embassy “employees” contradicted the order, so that all public relations specialists left the premises where the bilateral meeting is still taking place. followed by a press conference.
