Bob Beckwith, the New York firefighter who became famous after the attacks on the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001, has died at the age of 91, the newspaper reports. Fox News.
“Bob Beckwith has passed away. A man of high class and dignity. An American icon who represented the finest firefighters in New York and America during one of our most dangerous times. Rest in peace,” Peter King wrote in a previous post on X Twitter.
Beckwith, a 30-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department, was 69 and six years into retirement when he watched the Twin Towers collapse on television. Three days later, he decided to travel to lower Manhattan to help find survivors.
Dressed in his old gear, Beckwith managed to convince members of the NYPD and National Guard that he was late for duty and was given access to Ground Zero. Once on the scene, he began searching for survivors among the wreckage.
Beckwith’s image with George W. Bush was on the cover of Time magazine. Although Beckwith was only at Ground Zero that day, the helmet he wore remains a symbol of heroism.
