Road traffic to and from Portugal across the Vilar-Formoso border, Guarda district, has returned to normal after a protest by Spanish farmers near Fuentes de Onoro, Spain, was demobilized at 10:00 pm (9:00 am in Lisbon).
A source from the GNR da Guarda told Lusa that the movement had already returned to normal following the demobilization of Spanish protesters.
Farmers blocked traffic in both directions on two roads connecting the two countries: the E-80 motorway and the national N-620, near Fuentes de Oñoro.
Traffic was disrupted from 8:00 a.m. (7:00 a.m. in Lisbon) as farmers blocked roads with dozens of tractors and farm equipment, Efe news agency reported.
The same agency reported this evening that protesters had eventually retreated, ending the long closure of this important route between the two countries, although some were considering maintaining the blockade of border roads this morning with more protests expected. this week across the province.
During the protest, some cars and buses, as well as all ambulances, were allowed to pass throughout the day, but no incidents were recorded.
This protest was not sanctioned by the authorities and was not called by agricultural organizations, but is part of the mobilization of farmers through groups on the social network WhatsApp, which has been taking place since last week in Zamora, Leon, Valladolid and Salamanca.
Four agricultural organizations of Salamanca, which do not participate in these informal groups of protesters, warned today that the protest they called for this Thursday and which could last until Friday the 9th, will be strong and will not simply consist of “walking with tractor”.
ASAJA, UPA, COAG and UCCL expect at least 400 tractors to flood the regional and national roads of Salamanca this Thursday until they meet at around 13:00 (12:00 in Lisbon) in front of the government sub-delegation in the city, where they will open meeting to decide whether to continue the protest on Friday.
Farmers are demanding better conditions, similar to what happened in Portugal last week and in recent weeks in several European Union countries.
