This Monday, the President of Cape Verde expressed “deep regret” over the death of Namibia’s head of state, Hage Geingob, considering that “Africa has lost an outstanding leader.”
José Maria Neves classified the Namibian statesman as “an outstanding figure of nationalism and participant in the country’s liberation struggle”, according to a statement released by the President of Cape Verde.
“His legacy of dedication to the national and continental cause leaves an indelible mark on the political history of Africa,” he said, believing that “the memory and example of Hage Geingob will continue to inspire future generations.”
The head of state also expressed regret in a letter addressed to Namibia’s interim President Nangolo Mbumba, in which he reaffirmed Cape Verde’s “full solidarity with Namibia at this difficult time.”
Namibian President Hage Geingob, who was undergoing treatment for cancer, died at the age of 82 shortly after midnight on Sunday (11pm Saturday in Lisbon) in Windhoek, the country’s capital.
Anti-apartheid activist Hage Geingob would take office as president a few years later (in 2015) and would be primarily responsible for initiating negotiations with Germany to review atrocities committed by the German Empire during the colonial period.
