Hundreds of farmers protested this Monday in the streets of the Bulgarian capital against the government’s “complete failure” to deal with the problems of the sector and demanded the resignation of Agriculture Minister Kirill Vatev.
In Sofia, farmers called for the government’s resignation, accused of failing to deliver on promises to ease administrative burdens on farmers and compensate for high costs and falling incomes.
As in other European countries, including Portugal, Bulgarian farmers criticize EU rules, as well as rising prices for fertilizers and energy due to Russia’s war in Ukraine and rising imports of agricultural products, which are flooding the market and driving down prices.
