A house fire in Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, Guarda district, left two people homeless on Tuesday morning, a civil protection source told Lusa.
The blaze destroyed the top floor of a council-owned social housing complex, which was left uninhabitable. The alarm was received by the Subregional Command for Emergency Situations and Civil Protection of Beiras and Serra da Estrela at 12:08.
There were 10 operatives on the scene, supported by four vehicles from the Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo fire station, GNR and municipal civil protection.
Volunteer firefighters from Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo said an ambulance was mobilized to the scene, but no residents required hospital treatment.
The homeless are an elderly woman over 70 years old and her son about 30 years old.
The mayor of Figueira de Castelo, Rodrigo Carlos Condesso, who arrived at the scene of the fire, told Lusa that both residents would be temporarily housed in a housing complex in the area, as the municipality currently has no social housing.
The mayor also added that the meals will be provided by a local private institution for social solidarity (IPSS).
Carlos Condesso said the municipality’s technicians are already surveying the work that will need to be carried out so that residents “can return to their homes as soon as possible.” The mayor emphasizes that the house needs “serious work.”
