In 2023, the unemployment rate was above the national average (6.5%) in the Setúbal Peninsula (8.3%), Northern (7.0%) and Greater Lisbon (6.8%), with the Center recording the highest lowest level (5.3%), according to the INE.
According to the “Employment Statistics” for 2023, published this Wednesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE), compared to 2022, the unemployment rate increased from 0.1 percentage points (Greater Lisbon) to 1.2 percentage points (Alentejo) in five regions , decreased from 0.3 percentage points (Algarve) to 1.1 percentage points (Autonomous Region of Madeira) in the remaining four regions.
Last year, the nation’s unemployment rate was 6.5%, up 0.4 percentage points from the previous year and the second-lowest annual rate since 2011, behind 2022’s 6.1%.
