Portuguese families ask government to help rescue hostages in Gaza

The families of seven Portuguese hostages in Gaza this Wednesday asked Portugal to help them put pressure on everyone to return home. Moved and wearing T-shirts with photographs of their family members, they called on the Portuguese government to “do everything possible” to save their family members.

“I miss my son very much. He loves life, people and animals. We have a very close relationship,” said the 28-year-old mother of one of the hostages at a conference in Porto.

Another family member, whose brother is being held captive, said his friends who were imprisoned with him were nevertheless released and told him that hostages should “always remain silent” and that “they have little food.” However, the most alarming thing, he emphasized, is that his brother has two chronic diseases (asthma and celiac disease), and he is deprived of an inhaler.

“This is the most outrageous and horrific terrorist attack to hit this country in modern times. This attack had nothing to do with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but rather with the insane ideology of a terrorist organization,” said Dor Shapira, Israel’s ambassador to Portugal. On Tuesday, the President of the Republic met with these family members, to whom he assured that Portugal continues to apply pressure for their release.
