President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky just appointed the commander of the ground forces, Alexander Syrsky, as the new head of the army, is nominated Reuters.
Colonel General Alexander Sirsky, who has headed the Ukrainian Ground Forces since 2019, was appointed commander of the armed forces this Thursday, replacing General Valery Zaluzhny.
Syrsky was born in July 1965 in the Vladimir region of Russia, which at the time was part of the Soviet Union. He has lived in Ukraine since the 1980s, like many of his peers in the Ukrainian armed forces, and studied in Moscow at the Higher Military Command School, graduating in 1986 and serving for five years in the Soviet Artillery Corps.
Syrsky became the head of the Ukrainian Ground Forces in 2019 and received the call sign “Snow Leopard”.
Some of Ukraine’s greatest victories during the all-out invasion of Russia were achieved under Syrsky’s leadership. The commander led the defense of Kyiv in the first few months, and in April 2022 he was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine, the country’s highest honor. In July 2022, he planned and executed a lightning-fast counteroffensive that saw Russian troops withdraw from the city of Kharkov and recapture vast territories in the east and southeast.
In early 2023, Alexander Sirsky led the Ukrainian defense of the eastern city of Bakhmut, where thousands of soldiers on both sides died in one of the bloodiest battles of the war to date.
For the commander, the main thing is “the morale of his troops” who regularly visit the front.
