Bad weather snarled traffic at Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport this Thursday, forcing the cancellation of 14 arrivals and 13 departures until the early evening, reports ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal.
According to the ANA website, which Lusa consulted around 8:00 p.m., the last plane to land in Madeira arrived at 11:48 a.m.
In addition to the cancellation of departures and arrivals, scheduled flights by Ryanair and Wizz Air Hungary from Lisbon and Katowice (Poland), respectively, have been cancelled.
The Funchal port authority has extended a bad weather warning for the Madeira coast until 6am on Friday due to forecasts of very strong winds, rough seas and poor visibility.
The warning is based on instructions from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), which placed the archipelago on a yellow warning for wind, rain and rough seas, which deteriorated to orange in the mountainous areas and on the southern coast of Madeira Island as of 15:00. this Thursday until 3 a.m. Friday.
The regional civil protection service has warned the population and issued a set of preventive recommendations in light of the unfavorable weather forecasts predicted for the region with the passage of the Carlotta Trench.
The Regional Civil Protection Service therefore recommended avoiding travel to areas most affected “by this type of meteorological situation.”
Other recommendations from regional authorities include driving carefully, avoiding landslide-prone areas and ensuring rainwater drainage systems are functioning smoothly.
