UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres admitted this Thursday to Lusa that the United Nations is discussing ways to strengthen the protection of its workers on the ground after a record number of aid workers were killed in 2023.
Asked by Lusa whether the UN would develop a strategy to better protect its workers on the ground, Guterres told a news conference in New York that the organization would hold a “meeting precisely for this purpose.”
Stressing that there are different situations on the ground, especially between peacekeeping missions, “peace enforcement” missions, “which lead to more deaths” because they occur in places “where there is no peace”, and humanitarian missions, Guterres stressed, that humanitarian workers are of greatest concern.
