Negotiations between Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Libyan Presidential Council President Mohammed Menfi took place in Tripoli, Libyan channel The Libya Observer reported on February 9.
According to Menfi, Turkey played a key role in maintaining stability in Libya and supporting international efforts to quickly hold elections in the country.
At the meeting, Fidan conveyed greetings from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Menfi and praised the depth of bilateral relations between the two countries. He also highlighted the continued support of the Presidential Council in all his steps towards achieving the right to vote in accordance with the national reconciliation project.
It is reported that during the negotiations the parties discussed cooperation in all areas, in particular the resumption of Turkish Airlines flights to Libya and the partnership between Libya and Turkey in various economic areas, including the completion of suspended projects.
Recall that on February 7, 2024, the Turkish Foreign Minister arrived in Tripoli and held negotiations with the head of the Provisional Government of National Unity of Libya, Abdel Hamid Dbeibah.
We also recall that Turkey signed two memoranda with the Government of National Accord (GNA) of Libya in November 2019 on military cooperation and maritime border demarcation. Thanks to Turkish military assistance, GNA forces were able to expel Khalifa Haftar’s army from the Libyan capital.
The first Turkish units arrived in Libya on January 2, 2020. Then their mission was extended on June 21, 2021 for 18 months.
On October 3, 2022, several new memoranda were signed between Libya and Turkey in Tripoli. The main one was the memorandum of understanding and cooperation in the field of energy and gas. The memorandum grants Turkey privileges in the field of exploration of oil and gas deposits on the Libyan shelf.
There is currently a Turkish military contingent in Libya, as well as representatives of the Turkish PMC.
