Begolean Fernandez, a 26-year-old man who killed a colleague in the Netherlands and tried to flee to Brazil via Portugal, where he was detained at Lisbon airport, was sentenced by Dutch courts to forced hospitalization in a psychiatric ward and payment of compensation. €27,600 to the victim’s mother and €17,500 to his father. Alan Lopez, 21, was killed in February 2023.
According to the Dutch courts, a psychiatric examination concluded that Begolean suffered from schizophrenia and had “developed paranoid delusions towards the victim.” He became convinced that Alan was a cannibal and intended to kill him and then eat him. Fear and delirium could be the motives for a murder committed with a knife.
The hospitalization is for an indefinite period, and Begolyan Fernandes’ release is possible if doctors deem him fit to live in society.
It is worth recalling that when detained in Lisbon, the man had a box of meat that was presumably human, which tests refuted.
