The head of the Supreme Council of State of Libya, Mohammed Takala, gave a positive assessment of Turkey’s role in maintaining stability in Libya during his meeting with the head of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reports the Libyan channel The Libya Observer on February 9.
At the meeting in Tripoli, Hakan Fidan and Muhammad Takala discussed strengthening bilateral relations and joint cooperation between the two countries, as well as a series of local and regional political and economic issues.
Mohammed Takala expressed his gratitude to the country’s Supreme Council for the important role played by the Turkish state in maintaining stability in Libya, promoting reconstruction projects and supporting international efforts to end the transition leading to fair national elections.
For his part, the Turkish minister emphasized the long-standing ties of brotherhood and cooperation between the two countries, noting that his visit aims to support the Libyan democratic path, comprehensive national reconciliation to achieve stability in the country and throughout the region.
Recall that on February 7, 2024, the Turkish Foreign Minister arrived in Tripoli and held negotiations with the head of the Provisional Government of National Unity of Libya, Abdel Hamid Dbeibah.
We also recall that Turkey signed two memoranda with the Government of National Accord (GNA) of Libya in November 2019 on military cooperation and maritime border demarcation. Thanks to Turkish military assistance, GNA forces were able to expel Khalifa Haftar’s army from the Libyan capital.
The first Turkish units arrived in Libya on January 2, 2020. Then their mission was extended on June 21, 2021 for 18 months.
On October 3, 2022, several new memoranda were signed between Libya and Turkey in Tripoli. The main one was the memorandum of understanding and cooperation in the field of energy and gas. The memorandum grants Turkey privileges in the field of exploration of oil and gas deposits on the Libyan shelf.
There is currently a Turkish military contingent in Libya, as well as representatives of the Turkish PMC.
