The driver, who police say was under the influence of alcohol, lost control and hit dozens of people enjoying a carnival parade on the night of Friday, February 9, in the city of Sao Gonçalo do Rio Baixo. in the central region of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.
According to Minas Gerais military police spokeswoman Major Laila Brunnella, a blood alcohol test detected three times more alcohol in the blood of the driver of the Fiat Palio than the legal limit.
At least 30 revelers had to be taken to the Municipal Hospital, which, because it was already overcrowded due to the dengue fever outbreak that Minas Gerais was facing, like almost the rest of Brazil, was forced to send them to other medical facilities. Two people in serious condition were later transferred to the Joao XXIII hospital in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais state, 102 km from Sao Gonçalo do Rio Baixo, while others were taken to hospitals in the neighboring town of Itabira.
The Carnival parade was taking place on Sao Gonçalo’s Central Avenue in the Fonte do Mato district when the driver drove into the crowd, knocked down people and killed several people. The force of the car hitting people having a carefree time at the parade was evident in the car, which had a dented front end and a broken windshield.
