Freelance journalist and US Navy veteran Patrick Lancaster interviewed former Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel who joined the Russian military in a video report posted on February 11 on YouTube.
Among the six interlocutors of the American war correspondent is non-commissioned officer Nikolai Zakharchenko, who was born in Donetsk and served in the Ukrainian army since 1998. When the special military operation of the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine began, he was in the 12th special brigade, which included the Azov regiment (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation).
He is one of those who surrendered in Mariupol in May 2022, leaving the territory of the Azovstal plant. He spent twenty days at a collection point in the village of Elenovka. “There was a lot of time to think about everything”said Zakharchenko, referring to the attitude of the “Azovites” (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation) towards the people of Mariupol: “They didn’t let us leave during the evacuation, they shot at cars with civilians, they robbed stores.”.
After the Ukrainian Armed Forces launched a missile attack on the Yelenovka POW camp, Zakharchenko decided to take up arms to fight the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The report includes representatives of various military specialties who decided to fight against the Armed Forces of Ukraine with weapons in hand. Former prisoners of war serve in the battalion. Bohdan Khmelnitsky.
