The Lisbon Patriarchate supported the Mozambican diocese in abandoning Lent

The Lisbon Patriarchate will allocate part of the funds received as a result of the Lenten renunciation of Catholics to support work at a boarding school in Mocimboa da Praia, Cabo Delgado province, in the Diocese of Pemba, Mozambique.

In his message for Lent, published on the website of the Lisbon Patriarchate, Rui Valerio adds that the school belongs to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chambery, and that the structure “will welcome vulnerable children and young people, victims of war and open holes to catch water and thus solve problem of consumption of poisoned water.”

Cabo Delgado province has been facing an armed insurgency for six years, which has led to a military response since July 2021, with the support of Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) liberating areas near gas projects.

The conflict has already displaced one million people, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and nearly 4,000 people have died, according to the ACLED Conflict Recording Project.

In addition to this project in Mocimboa da Praia, the Lenten renunciation of Lisbon Catholics will also contribute to work at the Priestly House of the Patriarchate with the aim of building housing for young people, the patriarch added in his message.

The Patriarch also reported that in 2023, the Lenten renunciation in the Lisbon Patriarchate raised more than 161 thousand euros, which were intended for the construction of a shelter for teenagers and young people from the mountain who will study in Laleia, in the Diocese of Baucau in Timor-Leste.
