Kyiv condemned the destruction of Ukrainian grain by Polish farmers

The Ukrainian government condemned this Monday the “deliberate destruction” by Polish protesters of grain from their country destined for the European Union, on the border between the two countries.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Agrarian Policy said in a statement that it “strongly condemns” Sunday’s incidents in which a protest led Polish farmers to throw Ukrainian grain onto the road, angry at what they see as unfair competition blocking the border between the two countries.

Kyiv has already called on the Warsaw government to quickly identify and punish those responsible for the incident.

The demonstration, which saw Polish farmers throw grain onto the road, sparked a strong reaction in Ukraine, a country with a strong agricultural tradition that has been facing Russian invasion for two years and where millions died in the 1932-1933 Great Famine (Holodomor). , promoted by the Stalinist regime.

“Today we are witnessing a new escalation of violence on our common border,” condemned Taras Kachka, Ukraine’s deputy economy minister and his country’s trade representative, on Facebook.

“The lack of reaction from the Polish authorities to the destruction of supplies will lead to even greater xenophobia and political violence,” the deputy minister explained, criticizing Warsaw’s indifference to the problem.

Polish farmers who began blocking several border crossings with Ukraine on Friday have dumped the contents of several Ukrainian trucks in protest against what they see as unfair competition, according to photos and videos posted on social media.

“It’s hard to see Ukrainian cereals on the road,” complained Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Irina Vereshchuk.

Andrei Sadovy, the mayor of Lviv, a city in western Ukraine near Poland, called the incident “disgraceful,” attributing it to “pro-Russian Polish provocateurs.”

Poland has been one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters since the Russian invasion began in February 2022, but tensions over Warsaw’s unilateral ban on grain imports have strained relations between the allied countries.

In recent days, Warsaw authorities have raised the possibility of introducing new bans on the import of Ukrainian agricultural products to protect their farmers.

Poland banned imports of Ukrainian grain under the previous nationalist government, but maintained the ban after a new pro-European coalition took power in October 2023.
