The Israeli offensive in Rafah, where 1.3 million Palestinians are sheltering, is causing disagreement between Europe and the United States. Everyone agrees that military action is already “disproportionate, excessive, and the number of casualties is unbearable,” recalls the head of European diplomacy. What is not clear, says Josep Borrell, is that the US continues to supply weapons to Israel in the face of what is happening on the ground, unlike the EU. The United Kingdom itself, a great ally of Washington, this Monday asked Tel Aviv to “think seriously” about what it will do in Rafah. “People there have already moved four, five, six times, they have nowhere to go,” warns David Cameron, the British Foreign Secretary.
A major offensive has not yet begun, but attacks by Israeli forces have already begun around the city of Rafah, located south of the Gaza Strip on the border with Egypt, killing dozens of Palestinians. Despite calls from the international community, Israel says the operation must continue. “Only continued military pressure until final victory will lead to the release of the hostages,” says Prime Minister Netanyahu.
