A young man dubbed “Newton of Gaza” created a system to illuminate his family’s tent in the midst of war.

“Newton was sitting under an apple tree when an apple fell on his head and discovered gravity. Here we live in darkness and tragedy, so I thought about creating light.” Using two fans and a few wires, Hussam al-Attar managed to create electricity to light the tent he lives in with his family in Rafah, after they were forced to leave the house they lived in due to the war between Israel and Hamas . 15 year old boy says Reuters that the people living with them in the tent camp nicknamed him “Newton of Gaza”, after the English scientist Isaac Newton.

Hussam Al-Attar used two fans as small wind turbines capable of charging batteries. He placed them on the roof and with the help of several wires running through the house, switches and even light bulbs, he was able to create a customized lighting system for his family. He says the experiment took some time and was successful only on the third try.

“I was very glad that I was able to do this because I eased the suffering of my family and everyone who suffers from the conditions in which we live during this war,” he said. Reuters. The conflict between Israel and Hamas began on October 7 when militants from the Palestinian Islamic group invaded southern Israel.

The young man, who dreams of one day becoming as famous a scientist as Newton, says he was delighted to be called the “Newton of Gaza”. “I hope to fulfill my dream of becoming a scientist like Newton and creating an invention that will benefit not only the people of the Gaza Strip, but the entire world,” says Hussam Al-Attar.
