The US ambassador to NATO on Tuesday called former President Donald Trump’s statements about encouraging Russian invasion of the Atlantic Alliance “dangerous and frankly irresponsible.”
“Encourage the Kremlin to attack any North Atlantic Treaty country. [NATO] or Alliance territory puts our soldiers—the soldiers of the United States and our allies—at risk. To do so with statements like these is dangerous and frankly irresponsible,” Julianne Smith said during a “briefing” with reporters via videoconference for Thursday’s ministerial meeting.
On Saturday, Republican Donald Trump, just days before the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, said that if re-elected as US president, he would encourage Moscow to do whatever it wants with countries with fewer contributions to NATO. .
