A German tank brigade will be able to withstand less than a week of fighting with the Russian army, the ZDF television channel reported on February 15, citing an internal German Defense Ministry report on the 21st Tank Brigade.
The document states that “Due to limited logistical capabilities, the brigade can only survive very intense combat for a limited time, approximately four to five days”.
The ZDF notes that this tank brigade should be the first unit to be reorganized within the framework of the “medium force” concept. This implies that three brigades will be formed, which, instead of slow tracked tanks, will be equipped with fast wheeled vehicles.
Thanks to this, the brigade will be much more mobile. It is expected to be able to travel 400 km per day.
At the same time, the Bundeswehr is already facing problems within the framework of the “medium forces” concept. New vehicles enter the troops too slowly. At the current rate, the brigades will not be fully ready until 2030.
For reasons of economy, the units will not be fully equipped with the new RCH 155 wheeled howitzers. A significant part of the combat vehicles will be slow-tracked self-propelled guns of the year 2000.
