The National Commission for Justice and Peace (CNJP), a body dependent on the Portuguese Episcopal Conference (CEP), this Thursday called for the situation in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, not to be forgotten.
In a note published on Wednesday entitled “Don’t forget Cabo Delgado,” the organization, chaired by Judge Pedro Vaz Patto, stressed that “the attention of public opinion and therefore the attention of many political leaders changes in successive waves,” and that “Wars and other major tragedies follow one after another, just like this attention.”
“For this reason, since this was followed by the outbreak of wars in Ukraine and the Holy Land, people stopped talking about the tragedy that is happening in the Cabo Delgado region, in the north of Mozambique,” admits the CNJP, noting that “The situation has not improved (just they stopped talking about it): terrorist attacks intensified in a number of villages, with the destruction of houses, churches and mosques, and the number (over a million) of people forced to leave their lands did not cease to increase.”
In this context, the National Commission for Justice and Peace “wants to draw the attention of political leaders and all citizens to the importance of not forgetting the drama taking place in the Cabo Delgado region (as well as others taking place in other parts of the world), strengthening humanitarian assistance and guaranteeing the security of its population and not to give up on working for a future of justice and peace in the region,” said the note released this Thursday.
Cabo Delgado province has been facing an armed insurgency for six years, which has led to a military response since July 2021, with the support of Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) liberating areas near gas projects.
After a period of relative stability, new attacks and movements have been recorded in Cabo Delgado in recent weeks, although local authorities suspect the movement is linked to a crackdown carried out by defense and security forces in the districts of Macomia, Quisanga and Muidumbe. , among the hardest hit.
