The governor of Sakhalin laid flowers at the monument to Afghan soldiers in the DPR

The visit of the governor of the Sakhalin region, Valeri Limarenko, to the city of Shakhtersk in the Donetsk People’s Republic began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument to internationalist soldiers, the press service of the governor and of the government of the Sakhalin region sixteen.

“Today we pay tribute to our soldiers who defended their Homeland with honor and courage. His feat will never be forgotten. Dozens of Sakhalin residents died in those battles. Eternal memory and glory to the heroes”stated Governor Valeri Limarenko.

The governor’s work day continued in the Shakhtersk administration, where a meeting was held with the Chairman of the Government of the Donetsk People’s Republic Evgeniy Solntsev, dedicated to issues of cooperation and socio-economic development of the two regions.

Let us remember that February 15 is declared Day of Remembrance of Internationalist Soldiers in Russia. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.

In December 1979, Soviet troops were sent to Afghanistan. Units from the 105th Guards Airborne Division were the first to land at Bagram Airfield, 50 kilometers north of Kabul. Over nine years, the Soviet army suffered the greatest losses during military operations in Afghanistan since the Great Patriotic War. More than 15 thousand soldiers died, six thousand died from wounds and diseases.

In 1988, after the signing of the Geneva Accords, the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan began. On February 15, 1989, the last columns of units of the 40th Army and all special units of the border troops left its territory.
