Greece approved same-sex marriage this Thursday, the agency reported Reuters. The law gives couples the right to adopt children. Surrogacy is not covered.
Of the 300 deputies, 176 voted for the bill. Deputies from the prime minister’s center-right New Democracy party Kyriakos Mitsotakis abstained or voted against, but the law received sufficient support from the left opposition.
In Greece, the Orthodox Church opposes same-sex marriage.
Once the law is passed, the Mediterranean country, where the traditional family model still prevails, will become the 37th country in the world, the 17th in the European Union and the first Orthodox country to legalize same-sex adoption.
