Russia “bears responsibility for the situation that led to the death of opponent Alexei Navalny,” which “underscores the weakness and corruption” of Vladimir Putin’s regime, North American diplomacy chief Antony Blinken said Friday.
“This death in a Russian prison, as well as the fixation and fear of one person, only underscores the weakness and corruption of the regime that Putin has built. Russia bears responsibility for this situation,” Blinken said on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany. .
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said earlier that “given the Russian government’s long and abhorrent tendency to destroy its opponents, there are obvious questions about what just happened.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry said the United States should act with more restraint and wait for the autopsy results before blaming Moscow for the activist’s death.
