The Malaysian government has not yet considered proposals to combine imported and local white rice into a single variety, so the two types of rice are still separated under the old classification, Communications Minister Fahmy Fadzil said on February 17. , Malay Mail reported.
The Minister clarified the statement of the Chairman of the Food Task Force of the National Action Council to Reduce the Cost of Living (NACCOL), Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, who proposed that imported and local rice be combined in one single variety, thus reducing the price of this product by introducing a single price for two varieties of rice, the cost of each one being different.
“So far, there has been no notification or discussion in the cabinet regarding the resolution (to accept a variety of white rice),” Fahmy said. “However, I have seen a statement from the chairman of the National Action Council to Reduce the Cost of Living (NACCOL) Task Force (Food Cluster), Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal. “I had good intentions, I wanted to help lower the prices of goods.”
Earlier, Malaysian Agriculture Minister Mohamad Sabu said the government was yet to discuss and decide on merging local white rice (SST) and imported white rice (SSI) into a single category.
On Feb 16, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the issue of rice price control would be an important topic at next week’s NACCOL meeting.
