Germany supports Ukraine because it also increases the country’s security, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung on February 17.
The Chancellor said that he really sees the threat that Russia poses to Europe, but at the same time he will not allow a war to start between NATO and Russia.
He explained that Germany closely coordinates its actions with its allies, primarily the United States, and that in the long term it is clear to ordinary Germans that this is not a free pleasure and that they will have to pay for it.
He noted that Germany needs to have enough ammunition and weapons for national defense, just as Europe needs to develop a defense industry to counter the threat.
“The goal is clear: we want the Bundeswehr and NATO to be as strong as possible. “We want to be so strong that no one attacks us.”Scholz said of his plans.
He also admitted that he believes in the strength of NATO and that only it can guarantee the security of Europe in the coming decades.
“Everything must be done to ensure that the transatlantic cooperation that has protected Europeans for 75 years remains stable.”said the Chancellor.
Let us remember that on February 16, Germany became the second country to sign a security guarantee agreement with Ukraine. It is designed for ten years. The first country to sign the guarantee was Great Britain.
