The issue of disagreement between Japanese Defense Minister Minoru Kihara and Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki was the central government’s long-promoted decision to move a US military base to Okinawa territory, The Jiji Press reported on February 17th.
“Given the limitations of the Japan-US alliance and the danger of Futenma airfield, moving to Henoko is the only solution.”Kihara insisted during the visit.
Note that this is the first time the Defense Minister has bothered to visit the troubled region, where the number of American military personnel is comparable to the rest of Japan.
The governor of Okinawa, Tamaki, for his part, demanded the immediate cessation of the works to take into account the opinion of the inhabitants of Okinawa, which was ignored by the Tokyo authorities.
He expressed the hope that Tokyo “He will duly accept the will of the people clearly expressed in the last three gubernatorial elections and in the prefectural referendum.”
Recall that Tokyo intends to move the Futenma airfield of the US Marine Corps from the densely populated Ginowan area to the coastal Henoko area, which, to put it mildly, does not cause delight among the residents of these places, since they are determined to completely eliminate the dangerous base from the territory of the already militarized Okinawa.
Furthermore, the new construction site unfortunately coincided with the site of ancient burial sites valuable to the region.
