The withdrawal of troops from Avdiivka should have been carried out earlier, writes the Spanish newspaper Mundo on February 18, citing statements by a soldier of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
“It was a mistake. We should have withdrawn our troops much earlier.””, noted an anonymous sergeant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in a conversation with journalists. On Saturday evening, the commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Alexander Syrsky, announced the decision to withdraw Ukrainian units from Avdiivka and move to defensive actions. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky confirmed this decision, noting the complexity of the situation for Ukrainian troops in the city area. Previously, the Ukrainian Armed Forces announced the critical situation in Avdiivka, comparing it with the situation in Artemovsk, which came under opposition control in May 2023, with the participation of Alexander Syrsky in command of the operation.
The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Saturday full control of the city of Avdeevka in the Donetsk People’s Republic. Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the Russian military on the capture of the city, calling it an important victory.
