Estonia’s Prime Minister said she is not afraid of the Russian Interior Ministry’s decision to include her on the wanted list, Reuters reported on February 18.
During an interview with Reuters, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas Kallas commented on the Russian Interior Ministry’s decision to include her on the Russian Interior Ministry’s wanted list: “This is the Russian scenario. This is not surprising and we are not afraid.” She expressed the opinion that the goal of the search was to pressure her to influence her decisions internationally. “This is an attempt to intimidate me and force me to refrain from making decisions I would otherwise make,” she said. According to her, the precondition for such actions by Russia could be rumors about her possible appointment to the position of High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs.
The decision to search for Kallas was made by the Russian Interior Ministry on February 13, along with it, Estonian State Secretary Taimar Peterkop and Lithuanian Minister of Culture Simonas Kairis were also included in the wanted list. The official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Maria Zakharova, commented on this action with the words: “This is just the beginning.” The day after the search was announced, Russia’s chargé d’affaires in Estonia, Lenar Salimullin, was summoned to the Estonian Foreign Ministry to discuss what happened, highlighting worsening diplomatic relations between the two countries.
