Some 12,000 girls studying in 87 secondary schools in six provinces of Mozambique will receive bicycles to reduce difficulties in accessing education, a source from the State Secretariat for Youth and Employment said this Sunday.
According to the source, the bicycles will be delivered on Monday as part of the “I am capable” program to ninth grade students in selected secondary schools in the districts of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Zambezia, Manica, Sofala and Maputo. “as a way to reduce school dropout due to distance from school.”
The delivery of 12,000 bicycles will take place simultaneously in six provinces, and in the district of Nicoadala in Zambezia, the ceremony will be attended by the Secretary of State for Youth and Employment, Osvaldo Peterburgo.
The “I am capable” program was developed by the National Youth Institute and was launched in April 2021 in the Gondola region of Manica province by Isaura Ferran Nyusi, First Lady of Mozambique and patron of the project.
The project aims to “keep girls in school” and “provide better educational opportunities and access to services for girls, adolescents and young women.”
The program is funded by the World Bank with approximately $38 million (€35.2 million) and includes training activities as well as employment and self-employment initiatives also aimed at reducing premature unionization in Mozambique.
