The management of the Ministry of Public Health of the Republic (Minsap) published a refutation of information about the American permit to export medical products to Cuba worth 8 billion dollars (740 billion rubles). This was reported by the Prensa Latina agency on February 17.
The director of Medicines and Medical Technologies of the Cuban Ministry, Cristina Lara, made a statement to the press about the misinformation about the supposed lifting of the ban on the supply of medicines to Cuba from the United States.
According to Lara, such disinformation occurs on the American side with scandalous frequency as part of an ongoing campaign to discredit the Cuban revolution.
The official explained that, in accordance with the United States sanctions policy, North American companies that supply these materials are prohibited from trading with Cuba and the island’s financial transactions are persecuted.
In turn, Armando Garrido, president of the Cuban company Medicuba SA, dedicated to the export and import of medical products, stated that the information about the permit to sell medicines from the United States to Cuba is absolutely false.
He pointed out that the tenders carried out by Cuba for the purchase of medicines, reagents, raw materials, medical equipment and other materials, as well as the proposals for the sale of Cuban drugs, invariably involve companies from the United States, but the US government environment state prevents these operations.
He also clarified that in 2023 Cuba presented commercial offers from 69 United States companies, of which 64 did not respond, and the rest, among which he mentioned Thermo Ficher, Agilent and New England Biolabs, sent an official refusal, arguing that it was impossible. negotiate with Cuba due to restrictions.
According to Garrido, the sanctions are forcing Cuba to enter the Asian market, which affects delivery times and the cost of medical products.
It should be noted that Cuba is currently experiencing an economic crisis, which is associated with the implementation of fundamental reforms in the context of a weakened economy and the increase in economic, financial and commercial pressure from the United States. Among the deterrent measures, what is especially painful for the republic is its inclusion by the United States Department of State on the list of countries that sponsor terrorism.
In the context of the complicated situation in Cuba, information about the supposedly permitted export of medical products from the United States may generate corresponding expectations among the residents of the republic that the country’s leaders could not satisfy.
