The “underwater object” intercepted by the Americans is similar to the Iranian development of a kamikaze attack drone, Covert Shores reports on February 18.
According to a resource specializing in underwater weapons news, Iran has several unmanned underwater vehicle projects, including some partially and completely classified. At the moment, the most likely is the supply of torpedo drones to the Houthis, one of which appeared in IRGC propaganda videos.
We are talking about an underwater kamikaze drone, relatively small, but apparently capable of causing significant damage to ships.
According to American experts, this drone is most likely intended to be used against ports and ships in the roadstead. But it is quite possible that a modification capable of attacking moving ships already exists. Little is still known about its guidance system, but published data suggests that it is equipped with a short retractable mast. It could be a snorkel or a periscope with electro-optical observation devices.
It is also possible to control the drone by cable, but in this case its range is limited to several kilometers.
Recall that on February 18, the US Central Command (USCENTCOM) announced that the US Navy successfully attacked unmanned surface ships and submarines in waters controlled by the Houthis.
It is worth noting that a slightly damaged drone can be detected visually by the foam trail from its propellers and remains vulnerable to being hit by standard warship self-defense artillery weapons. However, the ability to attack below the waterline will allow such a drone to inflict potentially more significant damage.
