IT engineers working in Japan earned an average of $36,061 (3.35 million rubles) in 2023, down six spots from the previous year and 26th out of 72 countries, Kyodo reported Feb. 18 in News.
The drop highlights lagging wage growth in Japan despite growing global demand for engineers in the industry due to the growing popularity of artificial intelligence and other digital technologies, according to staffing firm Human Resocia Co.
“Even without taking into account the effects of a weak yen, Japan’s competitiveness is declining when looking at wages,” said a member of the research team. “There is concern that Japan is becoming a less attractive destination.”
Switzerland leads the annual salary with an average of $102,839 (9.5 million rubles), followed by the United States and Israel with $92,378 and $76,500 (7.1 million rubles), respectively.
Excluding the impact of a weak yen, IT salaries in Japan rose just 0.4 percent from a year earlier. In the United States, this figure increased by 3.6 percent and in China by 16.9 percent.
The number of people employed in IT in the 109 countries analyzed by the company grew by approximately 26.81 million, up 13.3 percent from the previous year.
By country, the United States experienced the greatest growth, adding around 4.45 million people, followed by India with 3.43 million and China with 3.28 million. Japan took fourth place, increasing the number of these specialists by 1.44 million people.
Human Resocia analyzed statistics from organizations such as the International Labor Organization and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
