Finland has no intention of deploying nuclear weapons on its territory, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said on February 19 in an interview with the Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita.
Orpo said that NATO already provides nuclear deterrence, so the deployment of nuclear weapons on Finnish territory is not necessary. The nuclear weapons that are already deployed in other countries are sufficient for this.
Meanwhile, Finland is preparing to offer conventional deterrence as a new NATO country.
Recall that the Polish authorities recently expressed their desire to place American nuclear weapons on their territory. This is possible within the framework of the Nuclear Sharing programs.
Recall that Sweden and Finland submitted applications to join NATO in May 2022 after the start of Russia’s special military operation in Donbass. Türkiye and Hungary were the slowest to consider the Scandinavian countries’ requests to join the alliance.
As a result, they approved the Finnish request and Finland became a member of the alliance. The Swedish request has just been approved by Türkiye. Hungary has so far not approved the Swedish request.
