The foreign ministers of the European Union plan to approve today the operation Aspidesthe naval mission in the Red Sea to protect merchant ships from Houthi attacks, during a meeting in Brussels in which they will address the wars in Gaza and Ukraine.
The mission will be made up of four frigates from France, Germany, Greece and Italywhich will also collaborate with an air patrol in the area, as explained by various diplomatic sources. Greece will command the mission and will house its headquarters.
The operation will have a purely defensive mandatewith the aim of escorting merchant ships sailing through the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, and shooting down any possible missiles or drones that the Houthis may launch at them.
