The European Union opens to sanction those responsible for Navalni’s death

The European Union has opened this Monday to sanction those responsible for the death of the Russian opponent, Alexei Navalni, last Friday in prison, and will propose to name the European sanctions regime against people who commit systematic abuses of Human Rights with his name. Following the death of Navani and the arrest of more than 400 protesters at rallies across Russia in memory of the dissident, the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrellhas stated that the bloc must send a “message of support to the Russian opposition”, at the same time, reinforcing aid to Ukraine almost two years after the military offensive launched by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“To pay tribute to Navalny and honor his memory, I will propose to the ministers that they rename our sanctions regime against Human Rights with his name, so that his name is forever written in the EU’s work in defense of Human Rights” , he announced before the meeting of EU foreign ministers in which Yulia Navalnaya, widow of the Russian opponent, participates. Regarding imposing sanctions against those responsible for Navalni’s death, the head of European diplomacy has assumed that will study in the next few days. “Member states will propose sanctions, no doubt. Against those responsible, well, the person ultimately responsible is Putin himself, but we can go down to the institutional structure of the prison system in Russia,” she said.

In this sense, numerous European foreign ministers have advocated adopting sanctions against Russia for the death of Navalni.
