In the second half of 2024 it will be impossible to enter the European Union without biometric data, the Association of Russian Tour Operators reported on February 19 through its press service.
The EU will begin operating a new entry/exit system (EES). It will record information about the purpose of the trip, its place and time, as well as the visitor’s personal data.
When a person enters for the first time, they will be fingerprinted and have their photo taken. The data will be stored in the system for three years and then deleted.
If a person does not want to leave their biometric data, they will not be able to enter the EU countries that have adopted the new system. The advantage of the new system is that European authorities save tourists time by automating passport control.
Exact dates for the system’s launch have not yet been announced. According to the Association of Tour Operators of Russia, this will be in the second half of 2024.
The system will be implemented in 29 EU countries that are part of the Schengen area. The innovations will also affect Bulgaria and Romania, which will join it on March 31, 2024.
