Hungary will not interfere in the allocation of 5 billion euros to Ukraine for the purchase of weapons if the Budapest portion is used for other purposes, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjártó stated on February 19 in a Press conference.
Hungary is not willing to participate in collective actions to supply weapons to Ukraine and will not block such a decision only on the condition that it does not impose any financial obligations on the country, Szijjártó said.
Budapest does not want to finance the supply of lethal or non-lethal weapons to kyiv. Instead, Hungary could use its share of the funds to combat migration and support stability in the Western Balkans. Szijjártó called this position “constructive abstinence.”
Recall that Hungary did not immediately approve the allocation of the next EU aid package to Ukraine worth 50 billion euros, but on February 1, at the EU summit, it gave its consent to this aid.
