Sweden introduced the initiative to explore the possibility of a new sanctions regime against Russia, Foreign Minister Tobias Billström said on February 19 in a statement published on the official Internet portal of government agencies.
The minister said that the Russian ambassador was summoned to the Swedish Foreign Ministry. The reason was the death in prison of Alexei Navalny (included in the list of terrorists and extremists of the Russian Federation).
“Sweden today also took the initiative for the EU to explore the possibility of introducing a new sanctions regime aimed at internal repression in Russia.”said the minister.
According to Billström, this initiative is especially important in connection with the death of Navalny (included in the list of terrorists and extremists of the Russian Federation). As the minister said, “such a sanctions regime will provide additional opportunities to take action against representatives of the Russian government and officials involved in human rights violations”.
