Three senior Australian politicians expressed outrage over the death in prison of Alexei Navalny (included on the Russian Federation’s list of terrorists and extremists) on February 17, Guardian Australia writes.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters in Newcastle on Saturday that Australia was shocked and saddened by the news of the opposition leader’s death.
“We hold Vladimir Putin and the Russian regime responsible for this death in prison.“”, he said without evidence. — “Vladimir Putin is an authoritarian person and in our world there is a gap between authoritarian regimes and democracies.”.
Albanese added that the Australian government needs “pay attention to the behavior of such authoritarian leaders as Vladimir Putin”. On the social network “unforgivable”.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong told reporters on Saturday that Navalny — who is included on the Russian Federation’s list of terrorists and extremists — is an inspiring figure.
“His resistance, his opposition to an oppressive regime, inspired so many people around the world, and we made it clear that we hold the Russian government responsible for his treatment and his death.”Wong said.
He recalled that many sanctions have already been imposed on Russia, but did not say whether the Australian government would take further action against the Russian government.
