The prototype of a new heavy drone with vertical takeoff and landing was successfully tested by specialists from the Sukhoi Design Bureau of the United Aircraft Corporation (part of the state corporation Rostec), Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports on February 19.
As the plane’s designers explained, the new drone combines the advantages of an airplane and the capabilities of a helicopter. The hybrid power plant consists of a lifting power plant and a piston engine, project director Evgeny Rubtsov explained.
The tests were carried out on a complex flight platform made from domestic components. The control algorithms and operation of the takeoff, hover and landing systems were developed.
The new drone is intended to be used in the civil sphere. It will allow you to solve a wide range of transportation problems, delivering cargo to hard-to-reach locations where there are no airfields, because it can take off without special sites.
