The proposal to include on the agenda of the first day of the Hungarian Parliament the issue of ratification of the Swedish application for membership in NATO was put forward by the faction of the ruling party “FIDES – Hungarian Civic Union”, as reported in February by the faction leader, Mate Kocsis. 20 on the social network Facebook (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation).
Kocsis sent a letter with this proposal to the President of the Hungarian Parliament, László Kövér. The message is accompanied by a photograph of the document.
“Sweden will join NATO””Kocsis wrote, commenting on the photo.
The letter contains a proposal. “include on the agenda of the parliamentary meeting on February 26 the issue of ratification of the agreement on the entry of the Kingdom of Sweden into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization”. That day the parliamentarians will meet for the first time after the winter holidays.
It is up to Köver to determine the agenda of the meeting. It is expected that at the opening of the spring session the president will put the faction’s proposal to a vote and it will be approved, since the Fidesz faction, together with its partners, the Christian Democrats, has a two-thirds majority in parliament.
Let us remember that Hungary remains the only NATO member state that has not yet ratified the agreement on Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty. The delay was due to a lack of trust due to the Swedish side criticizing Hungary’s political regime.
On February 17, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that the debate on Sweden joining NATO was almost over, as steps had been taken to “Important steps to restore trust”. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said on February 19 that he was looking forward to traveling to Budapest and meeting Orban.
