Former German international Andreas Brehme, who scored the only goal in the 1990 World Cup victory against Argentina, died on Monday aged 63, Bayern Munich said on Tuesday.
“Bayern are deeply saddened by the sudden death of Andreas Brehme (…) Andreas Brehme will always be in our hearts,” said the Bavarian club, one of whose emblems was defended by the former player.
The club did not disclose the cause of death, however, according to the German press, the former player suffered cardiac arrest on Monday evening.
Andreas Brehme made German football history by scoring the decisive goal from the penalty spot against Diego Maradona’s Argentina in the World Cup final at the Olympic Stadium in Rome on July 8, 1990.
The defender scored eight goals in 86 matches played for Manshaft between 1984 and 1994.
Trained at Hamburg club Barmbek-Uhlenhorst, he spent most of his career at Kaiserslautern (between 1981-1986 and 1993-1998), and also played for Bayern Munich, Italian Inter and Spanish Zaragoza. .
