By the end of the year, more than 20 pieces of equipment will be supplied to the Yamalspas search and rescue teams, the press center of the government of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug reported on February 20.
“We are regularly updating the equipment designed to save our citizens. “Most of this year’s new equipment will be sent to the new Yamalspas divisions in Muravlenko and Novy Urengoy.”stated the head of Yamalspas, Alexey Glushkov.
Yamalspas employs more than 550 people. Among them are divers, rescuers and observation pilots. Last year they traveled to the tundra, forest and rivers of Yamal about 1,300 times. More than 900 Yamal residents received assistance.
As a reminder, search and rescue (SAR) is the search for and assistance to people in distress or imminent danger. The general search and rescue area includes many special areas, usually determined by the type of terrain being searched. These include mountain rescue; ground search and rescue, including the use of search and rescue dogs; search and rescue work in cities; battlefield combat search and rescue and air-sea rescue over water.
The International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) is a United Nations organization that promotes the exchange of information between national urban search and rescue organizations. The duty to provide assistance is provided for in article 98 of UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea).
One of the world’s first SAR attempts occurred after the 1656 wreck of the Dutch merchant ship Vergulde Draeck off the western coast of Australia. Three different SAR missions were carried out, but all failed.
On November 29, 1945, a Sikorsky R-5 helicopter performed the first rescue of the crew of an oil barge that had run aground on Penfield Reef. People were rescued before the barge sank.
