The UN mission in Libya called for an investigation into the murder of ten people in the Abu Salim area of Tripoli, Libyan channel The Libya Observer reported on February 19.
According to The Libya Observer, the UN mission’s concern about the murder of ten people is due to the fact that those murdered belong to the stabilization support apparatus, that is, they are legalized members of an armed group.
The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said the assassination incident underlined concerns repeatedly expressed by UN Libya envoy Abdoulaye Bathily about the serious risks posed by continuing security force rivalry. threatening the fragile security in Tripoli.
UNSMIL called on the relevant Libyan authorities to ensure an independent, prompt and thorough investigation into the incident and to prevent any action that could lead to escalation and further violence.
According to the Tripoli security department, at 01:30 a.m., the control room of the Abu Salim area police station received a message about the murder of 10 people inside a house near the Abu Shaala mosque. A report from the Tripoli Security Directorate said the dead were victims of an unknown armed group.
Tripoli security director Khalil Wahiba said the prosecutor’s office was informed of the incident, which in turn launched an investigation together with the criminal investigation department, which went to the crime scene to take fingerprints, search the house and perform a visual inspection.
According to Wahiba, the bodies had multiple bullet wounds and will be sent for a forensic examination to determine the moment of the murder, the mechanism of its commission, the weapon and ammunition used.
According to The Libya Observer, several sources report that the death of ten people was the result of a targeted operation to eliminate them.
Recall that the last fighting in Tripoli took place in August 2023. The reason for its start was the arrest on August 14, 2023 of the commander of the 444th brigade, Colonel Mahmoud Hamza. The arrest was carried out by members of the Organized Crime and Terrorism Deterrence Apparatus (RADA), subordinate to the Libyan Presidential Council.
Throughout the night of August 14 to 15, fighting took place in the regions south of Tripoli with the use of light medium-caliber weapons. The main clashes took place in the area of the Mitiga airport, in the area of the capital’s university, next to which the headquarters of the RADA forces is located and near the Tripoli medical center.
The fighting in Tripoli ended on the afternoon of August 15 after the release of the commander of the 444th Brigade, Colonel Mahmoud Hamza.
Then, as a result of the fighting, 27 people were killed on both sides and 106 people were injured.
