Julian Assange, the 53-year-old Australian journalist and founder of WikiLeaks, was nominated for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize by a Norwegian lawmaker on Tuesday, the newspaper reported. La Prensa Latina.
“Assange exposed Western war crimes and thereby contributed to peace. If we want to avoid war, we must know the truth about the damage that war causes,” said Sophie Marhaug, an MP from the Red Party.
He adds that the journalist “should be praised for the contribution he has made to peace” but is instead subjected to political persecution when it comes to extradition trial to the US, which began before a court in London on Tuesday.
Explains thatBy awarding Assange the Peace Prize, the Nobel Institute makes clear that we do not accept “double standards.”
Assange is accused of obtaining and subsequently publishing on WikiLeaks confidential documents related to US national defense, including evidence exposing human rights abuses committed by the US military in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He faces more than 18 criminal charges for violating the Espionage Act and could be sentenced to up to 175 years in prison. He has been held at Burlmarsh maximum security prison in London since 2019 after the Ecuadorian Embassy in London revoked political asylum granted to him in 2012.
According to the newspaper, candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize are nominated, in particular, by university professors, parliamentarians and members of international courts, and it is awarded annually in the Norwegian capital Oslo on December 10, which coincides with the anniversary of the death of its founder Alfred Nobel.
