Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s statement that Israel committed genocide in the Gaza Strip was supported by his Colombian counterpart Gustavo Petro, who published the corresponding post on his social media page on February 20.
“I express my total solidarity with Brazilian President Lula. “A genocide is taking place in the Gaza Strip, thousands of children, women and the elderly are being cowardly murdered.”he wrote.
Petro pointed out that the Brazilian leader simply told the truth, which must be defended to resist barbarism. He called for unity to stop the violence in the Palestinian territory.
Mexico’s president also called for the International Court of Justice’s January ruling that Israel must take steps to prevent genocide in the Palestinian enclave to have diplomatic implications across the board.
Let us remember that on February 18, Lula da Silva compared the actions of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the Gaza Strip with the atrocities organized by Adolf Hitler. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said such statements cross red lines. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz protested to the Brazilian ambassador, Frederico Mayer, and declared Silva persona non grata in Israel. Brazil subsequently recalled its ambassador to Israel.
